Programs Overview

Through our almost 10 years of existence, we have been developing school programs for Toddlers, Two´s and Preschool age children at our small Ficus Tree Preeschool in Opera Salvaje community. For the past 3 years we have started our Elementary program and, in 2013 we built a new campus for our Elementary school which will continue to grow gradually up to 6th grade.

Our Montessori pre-school program help children achieve their potential without pressure. We realise every child is different, and no standardised curriculum meets each child’s academic needs. In both our preschool and elementary programs our small class sizes and low student-to-teacher ratios allow our teachers to help each child succeed at a level and pace that are right for them.

Our small class sizes and low student-to-teacher ratios allow our teachers to help each child succeed at a level and pace that are right for them. During this time, we aim to turn the child’s natural curiosity into positive learning experiences, thus setting the roots for a love of learning.

Toddlers (1.4 – 2.3 yrs) & Twos (2.4 - 3.3 yrs)

"The development of the child during the first three years after birth is unequaled in intensity and importance by any period that precedes or follows in the whole life of the child." - Maria Montessori

In the toddlers and two´s program many children are experiencing the first separation from their primary care giver. Care is given to assist the young child and parent in handling separation and in making this a positive and healthy experience. Teachers support and guide toddlers in many different areas such as:

  • Helping to emerge their motor skills;
  • Modeling for their first social skills;
  • Facilitating their natural sense of exploration and curiosity;
  • Building the seeds for self confidence and independence;
  • Aiding in the potty training process;
  • Focusing on fundamental language and communication skills;
  • Learning all the pre-skills that will be developed in the preschool program.

“Teach by teaching, not by correcting” - Maria Montessori

In the preschool program we aim to continue the personal growth of every student and prepare him/her for the upcoming more academic demands. In these levels there are no papers returned to a child with red marks and corrections. Instead, the child's effort and work are respected. There is neither punishment nor reward because Dr Montessori observed that small children expect neither. Their reward is in the happy completion of a job itself and the natural respect that it commands. These principles we believe set the grounds for students to become self-confident, independent and prepared to continue their development for the elementary years.

During these years, children are exposed to all learning tools which will allow them to become successful and complete human beings. All learning concepts and areas are presented through Montessori materials and though the Montessori approach. We enrich the learning experiences through: self-awareness, guided instruction, open structures, centers, oral presentations and cooperative works. We give the students time, materials and guidance to motivate and strengthen their interests and skills. The abilities of reasoning and higher thinking are essential on this level.

All programs are thematic and based on authentic subjects related to the outside world.

Elementary School (6.4 – 12.3 yrs)

“It is true that we cannot make a genius. We can only give to teach child the chance to fulfil his potential possibilities.” - Maria Montessori

Our beautiful, 5300 square feet, 100-student capacity Elementary school, located in the heart of beautiful Playa Hermosa, features an emphasis on natural elements, outdoor areas and ample-sized classrooms. The Elementary Program offers a continuum built on the Montessori preschool experience. With our small-sized group classrooms, the individual needs of each child can still be met using a more traditional approach and all areas of the curriculum integrated through creative and hands on activities. We are currently accepting enrolment applications.

Interdisciplinary Activities

Integrated in our school program are several interdisciplinary activities which together, enrich our curriculum and enhance the student´s interests, knowledge, self-awareness and creativity.

Yoga

We have included Yoga classes in our school curriculum. This activity has numerous benefits for the children and is taught by professionals.

Benefits of yoga are numerous: physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves. Doing yoga, children exercise, play, connect more deeply with the inner self, and develop an intimate relationship with the natural world that surrounds them.

Swimming

Physical education

Physical Education. Quality physical education programs are needed to increase the physical competence, health-related fitness, self-responsibility and enjoyment of physical activity for all students so that they can be physically active for a lifetime. Some benefits of these classes include: skill development, self discipline, stress reduction, strengthen peer relationships and improve self-confidence and self-esteem.

Capoeira

Besides being fun and eye-catching, Capoeira is a very efficient tool in child’s development. Capoeira helps develop balance, coordination, general level of fitness and flexibility, sense of rhythm and awareness of your own body.  The musical aspect of Capoeira helps children feel more comfortable and more willing to exercise.  Training Capoeira also builds self-esteem and helps the child to develop a sense of identity as an individual, as a member of a nurturing community and as a member of global society.

Other Physical Activities

In addition to our yoga, dance and swimming classes, teachers integrate creative movement, dramatic play, and other daily activities in their programs.

Music

Music is a continuous, present and consistent part of the school program. At the preschool level music is approached through singing activities, exposure to different music and sounds, and listening to music each day This way, children are exposed to a rich sensory environment, which we believe are essential to their social, emotional and intellectual development. In both the preschool and the elementary  levels music classes are part of the school curriculum.

Creative arts

Drama, poetry, painting, drawing, crafts, storytelling are all woven into the day and used to reinforce the themes and topics.

Environmental Education

One of our main objectives in our school programs is to cultivate in every child an appreciation of nature and respect for the natural world. At our elementary school gardens we have an ongoing Environmental Program which consists of real, practical and hand on activities which main objective is to create awareness, responsibility, sense of community and pride in each student. Some of our ongoing activites include: recycling, organic farming, garden maintenance and cleaning, reforestation and others. We work with the local community and projects as they continuously grow.

Multi-Cultural Appreciation

Living in a country such as Costa Rica, the cultural-enriching opportunities which our children are exposed to should be used in the most positive, lasting, inspiring and valuable way. This is what we believe and, through our teaching and philosophy, children develop a deep respect for traditions and learn to recognize the commonalities inherent in all people.
